LAS VEGAS (AP) — The great adventure Taylor Swift promised fans in Tokyo continued Sunday at Allegiant Stadium, where the pop star planned to watch boyfriend Travis Kelce and the rest of the Kansas City Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. Kelce then invited her to watch him perform at the home of the Chiefs, and she showed up for a Week 2 game against Chicago. Swift soon became a regular at games, both home and away, frequently sitting with Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Photos You Should See View All 21 ImagesFew will be under a brighter spotlight than Swift, though. The international leg of her Eras Tour resumes Friday night with the first of three shows at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Inside the vast sweep of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, almost nobody was paying attention to what was happening on the field. Those fans who remained in their seats were staring up at the big screens, absorbed by a game a thousand miles away. The live sporting event playing out in front of them could not compete with the appeal of the Matildas. Over the course of the last three weeks, Australia has fallen — and fallen hard — for its women’s soccer team. Images of Matildas players beam out from billboards and television screens and the front pages of every newspaper.

Fans celebrated in central Melbourne this week after a national triumph: The Matildas, the Australian women’s soccer team, had defeated Canada, the reigning Olympic champion, 4-0. It was a glorious victory after a dismal start to the Women’s World Cup for one of the two host teams. In Federation Square, Australians held up gold and green scarves and bellowed, “Up the Matildas!”Two years earlier, the same city had seen a similar outpouring of support for the Australian women’s cricket team. Inside Melbourne Cricket Ground, more than 86,000 people had gathered to watch the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup, while 1.2 million people tuned in from elsewhere in Australia. For Ellyse Perry, an Australian sporting legend who has represented the country in both the cricket and soccer World Cups, the 2020 match — the largest crowd ever to watch a women’s cricket match — was a milestone for women’s sports in Australia.

[1/2] Australia rugby union coach Eddie Jones poses with a ball, flanked by Wallabies players Andrew Kellaway and Reece Hodge at a news conference, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, in Melbourne, Australia, May 1, 2023. Whether the AFL’s late press call was by coincidence or design, Rugby Australia officials were left fuming as the spotlight shifted away from their global sport to the homegrown game popular in only the nation's southern states. Appointed in January, Jones's second stint in charge of the Wallabies sees them much diminished from his first when he took them to the final of the 2003 World Cup on home soil. In 2002, Jones was the last Australian coach to win the Bledisloe Cup, the annual series against New Zealand. Rugby Australia will hope Jones can deliver Rugby Championship wins along with his sharp wit and penchant for a sound bite to help build more buzz around the fallen twice World Cup winners.
MELBOURNE, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Australia T20 captain Aaron Finch announced his retirement from internationals on Tuesday, drawing a line under a career that yielded two World Cup trophies and more than 8,000 runs across formats. Also the former one-day skipper, Finch retired from the 50-over game last September and then took the home summer to decide on his T20 future after Australia's World Cup title defence ended before the semi-finals. At his home Melbourne Cricket Ground, where he savoured his first World Cup triumph in the 50-over tournament in 2015, Finch said it was time for a successor to make a mark. "Today, fully, I think the time is right to let the T20 team move on into a new phase, particularly with a World Cup coming up in 2024," he told reporters. Invariably, he was right, and his calm leadership proved invaluable as his written-off team clicked in the United Arab Emirates to win a first T20 World Cup.
MELBOURNE, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Mitchell Starc threatened South Africa number three Theunis de Bruyn with a 'Mankad' dismissal on Thursday after the batsman wandered way outside his crease at the non-striker's end during the second test in Melbourne. "Just stay in your crease, it’s not that hard," Starc barked at him. During the post-match media conference, Starc said he would consider dismissing players with the Mankad in future if he saw them taking off early like De Bruyn, earning a firm endorsement from his captain Pat Cummins. Starc said De Bruyn had been leaving his crease early on day three in Melbourne as well. Starc will not have the opportunity to Mankad De Bruyn in the next test, having been ruled out of the match due to an injured tendon on the middle finger of his bowling hand.
CNN —England won the T20 World Cup Final in sensational style, defeating Pakistan by five wickets in front of more than 80,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. As he did three years ago when England won the one-day World Cup, Stokes hit the winning runs and, with those runs, England became the first ever men’s side to hold the one day and T20 World Cup at the same time. I think the way we bowled, Adil Rashid, Sam Curran, that’s what won us the game,” Stokes said afterwards, according to the BBC. William West/AFP/Getty ImagesPakistan batted first, after England won the toss and elected to bowl, but struggled to set a high total under a barrage of precise bowling. But England attacked off the final four overs and wrapped up the victory with six balls to spare.
Ben Stokes of England celebrates victory following during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Final match between Pakistan and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 13, 2022 in Melbourne, Australia. Ben Stokes starred in a final once again as England became dual white-ball world champions after overcoming Pakistan by five wickets to win the T20 World Cup at the MCG. England rallied to overpower New Zealand, edge past Sri Lanka and decimate India before seeing off Pakistan to end their opponents' hopes of winning the T20 World Cup for a second time and of repeating their victory over England at the MCG in the 1992 50-over final. Babar's exit came at the start of the 12th over with Pakistan 84-2 and they went on lose six wickets for 47 runs. England will remain in Australia to play a three-match one-day international series against Australia, beginning on Thursday at Adelaide before fixtures at the SCG on Saturday and MCG on November 22.
The tournament has already seen a slew of Super 12 matches washed out, though the semi-finals passed without disruption in Sydney and Adelaide. In the worst-case scenario where Monday is also washed out, then the World Cup will have joint winners for the first time. However, Melbourne is known for having "four seasons in one day", particularly in spring, and forecasts are often wide of the mark. "On the day, I'm sure that Melbourne is going to open up enough to have a 10-over match." ADELAIDE, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Alex Hales and captain Jos Buttler shone in a record unbroken opening partnership as a ruthless England humiliated India by 10 wickets at Adelaide Oval on Thursday to storm into the Twenty20 World Cup final. England, who won the 50-over World Cup on home soil in 2019, can now become the first team to hold both global trophies in white-ball cricket when they meet Pakistan in Sunday's final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Their 170-run stand was the biggest opening partnership in T20 World Cup history and England's biggest for any wicket at the tournament. It set up a mouthwatering duel against Pakistan, 30 years on from the teams' 50-over World Cup final in 1992 at the MCG which the south Asians won. England had to make changes for the semi-final, with pace spearhead Mark Wood and number three batsman Dawid Malan out injured.
Jos Buttler and Alex Hales of England share a laugh as they celebrate victory during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Semi Final match between India and England at Adelaide Oval on November 10, 2022 in Adelaide, Australia. An incredible unbroken opening stand between Jos Buttler and Alex Hales saw England book their place in the T20 World Cup final with a stunning 10-wicket victory over India in Adelaide. Knockout stages are about keeping calm and handling pressure and the way we started with the ball was not ideal. It shows we were a little nervy but you have to give credit to England." India coach Dravid thrilled with 'phenomenal' Yadav

The Mumbai magician gave another clinic in range-hitting as he blasted an unbeaten 61 off 25 balls in the 71-run trouncing that booked India a semi-final against England. His strike rate of 193.96 leaves everyone in the shade, though, and will give England's bowlers plenty of food for thought ahead of Thursday's semi-final in Adelaide. It left India's huge army of supporters jumping in the terraces and coach Rahul Dravid reaching for superlatives. "Scoring at a strike rate that he does, it's not easy to be consistent," Dravid told reporters. Dravid said India could make changes for the England showdown depending on the Adelaide pitch but the team's mindset would remain consistent.
(CNN) England suffered a shock defeat against Ireland at the T20 World Cup as rain in Melbourne thwarted the team's run chase. Pursuing Ireland's total of 157, England had Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone at the crease and needed 53 runs from 33 balls to win when rain arrived at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. At that point, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, which calculates a team's target score when rain stops a match, intervened to hand Ireland a five-run victory. The result means England, one of the favorites to win the tournament, will likely have to defeat reigning champion Australia on Friday in order to reach the semifinals. Andrew Balbirnie led the scoring for Ireland with a superb 62 from 47 balls, while Lorcan Tucker added 34 as England's bowlers failed to gain an advantage in Wednesday's match.
Virat Kohli struck an imperious half-century and Ravichandran Ashwin was cool at the death as India secured a four-wicket win on the final ball against arch-rivals Pakistan at the T20 World Cup on Sunday in front of a huge Melbourne Cricket Ground crowd. Kohli was bowled off the free hit on the next ball but the ball rattled for three byes off the stumps. Fans show their support during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground. “All credit to Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli,” said Pakistan captain Babar Azam. “They shifted the momentum and finished the game well … We had a chance, and we just asked the boys to believe in themselves, but again credit to Virat Kohli.”
